Dinakdakan, Pinakbet and a whole lot more, only in Ilocos
Jan 2I recently spent a night in Vigan City formerly known as Ciudad Fernandina. That night, I found myself in front of freshly cooked Pinakbet, Dinakdakan and some more gastronomic delights in Vigan Plaza Hotel.
Probably one of the most popular Ilokano dish that has hit mainstream is Pinakbet. It is a mix veggies of string beans, okra, ampalaya, among others, with some bagnet cubes and bagoong.
I swear, I never eat pinakbet because it has okra and ampalaya. I hate the slimy consistency of the okra, and the bitter taste of ampalaya. All other vegetables are fine with me.
But in the spirit of adventurism, I ate pinakbet when I was in Vigan. And yeah, the flavor’s good. It even looks different from the pinakbet that I get to see here in Metro Manila.
Aside from Pinakbet we also ordered Dinakdakan. The name sounds intriguing. It was actually my first time to hear that word, and see and taste this Ilokano dish.
Dinakdakan is somewhat similar to the Kapampangan’s Sisig. The Ilokano Dinakdakan is made of chopped grilled pork cheeks, ears, calamansi juice, mayonnaise, salt and pepper. Dinakdakan is a good dish but I guess it would be better if paired with an ice cold beer.
Aside from these two Ilokano delicacies we ordered, we also had spring rolls, and mixed barbecue with prawn, hungarian sausage, tuna, salmon, and squid to complete our dinner.
Everything was perfect. Food’s great. And the al fresco dining along the Calle Crisologo is a must-try!

Isa sa paborito kong pagkain ang pinakbet o kung tawagin naman ay pakbet, lalo ng kung maraming ampalaya na kalahog. Pero first time ko lang narinig yung dinakdakan na pagkain. I know when I was growing up in Pinas, we used the word “dadakdakan” to beat up somebody in a less serious way than “gulpe” LOL.
