Tasting the authentic Vigan Empanada
Dec 30When I originally planned my trip to Ilocos a few weeks back, there was only one thing in my mind: Eat Vigan Empanada!
A day after I was discharged from the hospital after I got an acute gastro enteritis which then lead to acute renal failure, I saw myself flying to the Ilocandia region.
Though I haven’t fully recovered yet, I was so excited to go back to Ilocos because I know I can taste the authentic Vigan Empanada again!
After our trip to the Chavit Singson Baluarte Zoo, Audrey, Monic, Mee-I and I then head to Insiang’s Empanada, near the Calle Crisologo to satisfy our cravings for this fried Ilokano treat.
Seeing them cook the empanada right before our eyes was a delightful treat.
What I observe is that they first spread some vegetables on the empanada wrapper. Ground meat is then added, or in some cases, Vigan Longganisa. A Fresh egg is then dropped onto the mixture. The wrapper is then sealed and deep fried in hot oil.
As expected, the Vigan Empanada never failed to satisfy me. And seeing them making this deep fried goodie was actually more than a visual treat.
Special Empanada which contains ground Vigan Longganisa and fresh egg costs PHP35.00 while ordinary empanada which only contains vegetables and is much smaller in size costs only PHP5.00.
Yes, you can still buy something good and delicious with your PHP5.00 coin!
