Dulgies Cakes: Iloilo’s Sweet Spot
Dec 23I heard of the brand Dulgie’s sometime late last year or early this year. Those who have been following my blog since 2006 can confirm how I love the Calea Cakes of Bacolod so much.
So when I first heard of Dulgie’s I can’t help but ask people if is it really at par with my favourite cake house. Many said yes. Some wouldn’t dare compare the two, as according to them each has its own character.
It was only on the very last day of November 2008 when I was finally able to set foot in this Iloilo’s sweet spot.
I was met by two Iloilo bloggers for a quick merienda: Marcos of Explore Iloilo and Whyte of Flavours of Iloilo.
Marc ordered a Shrimp BLT Sandwich and Blueberry Cheesecake, Whyte got a Lemoncello while I ordered a Pecan Caramel Cheesecake.
Anybody who has been following my BYAHILO blog would know that cheesecakes are my weakness.
In all fairness, I love the interiors of Dulgies. The subdued lighting adds a dramatic feel when dining. I also like the decors inside. It feels so homey inside.
And the food? I was kind of surprised how they served their cheesecakes. It looks so messy. They were not sliced well using an extra sharp knife that the cheesecake falls apart. I also noticed that their cheesecakes are much drier compared to Calea’s.
Another difference I have seen is that Dulgies is using the traditional Graham crust, unlike Calea which is using a honey, nuts and oats as its crust, which in my opinion has more character.
Despite some differences with Calea, Dulgies’ cheesecakes aren’t that bad at all. I would still pick it as one of the best cheesecakes I have tasted.
I tried Whyte’s Lemoncello. And I fared well too. I was just too scared seeing a thick icing on top of the cake. I love the way how they decorated their lemoncello.
But I guess the winner in our table was Marc’s Shrimp BLT Sandwich. It was so big, almost good for two persons already. The sandwich is really bulging with all the filling. Shrimp bits, bacon strips, crispy lettuce leaves and tomatoes, mixed with mayo dressing. Yummy!
Though I would still vote for Calea’s cheesecakes, I still recommend Dulgies as a dessert stop when visiting Iloilo.
Some of my readers were actually right. Calea and Dulgies should never be compared. Each has its own character. There are food items on the menu that are not present either in Calea or in Dulgies. Some people prefer moist cheesecakes, while some prefer a drier version.
And why should I complain? It’s still cheesecake after all.

there maybe some problems with the slicing pero IMO Dulgies cheesecakes is one of the best in the country but they got famous because of their chocolate cake which is believe named “Heaven’s Cake”. I heard that the store is due for expansion
